In today’s day and age, most people do not have time to go to the gym. People realize the benefits of exercise, but they don’t have a chunk of time where they can go to the gym and get in a workout. If they had a home gym, they may be more apt to use it; saving time not traveling to your local gym is a big gamechanger. If you have a garden shed shed that you wouldn’t mind repurposing, why not turn it into a private gym. One that doesn’t require a car ride and that you can use any time of the day or night. Clean Out the Gardening Tools
The first thing you will want to do is clean out the shed. No one wants to work out with a rake staring them in the face, reminding them that they need to do yard work on top of everything else. If you want a true gym sanctuary, declutter and remove all the gardening accessories.
Reinforce the Floor
The heaviest thing that you might have crammed into your shed is a lawn mower. If you plan on putting exercise equipment and weights in your gym, you may need to make some modifications to the floor.
If you shed sits on the ground, make sure that the wood is stable and not rotting. If you have a raised shed, that sits just off the ground, make sure that you reinforce the floor so that you don’t drop a dumbbell through it.
Fumigate and Ventilate
Shed’s tend to have a lot of outdoor smells. Fertilizers, grass seeds, gasoline are all typical garden shed odors. Open the door and air out the shed. Sweep everything down and put a fresh coat of paint on the walls.
Also, make sure that you have proper ventilation in your shed. When you are working out you will get hot and sweaty and sheds tend to hold heat. This is not ideal for a workout space. Add a window or ventilation strips at the roof line. Be sure to use wired mesh or some other form of pest control to keep the critters out.
If there are signs of rodents, bees, or ants, make sure you find the point of entry and rectify the situation. There are traps for each of these that you can get at your local hardware store, as well.
You will want to have lights and a power source in your shed. If you want to play the radio, have a fan, or plug in a treadmill, you will need electricity. If you shed is not wired for power, consult an electrician to see what needs to be done to get your shed on the grid. If you opt for green energy, you can add a solar panel to the sheds roof, providing it gets sun exposure, and use that for your power needs.
Decide what you want to have in your gym and how much room you have to work with. If you are looking to put on some muscles, consider a weight bench. If you like a good cardio workout, a treadmill or stair climber might be a good choice. There is nothing wrong with incorporating a little bit of everything too. Just make sure that you plan out your space and empty spaces appropriately, such as dumbbells hung on the wall, instead of on the ground.
Having a home gym is a nice feature for those who can’t get to a gym. By turning your garden shed into a private gym, you are utilizing space that may just be a catch-all, and turning it into something useful.
