Unexpected; Unanticipated; Unparalleled: ‘Nothin’ Left But The Rest’ – A New Album From Kid Creole and the Coconuts
G.H. HARDING

The legendary Kid Creole and the Coconuts, led by the musical inspiration of August Darnell, was thought to be long gone, a musical conclusion … but, hope springs eternal – a new album from KC&C will be released on June 18, entitled Nothin’ Left But The Rest on 2C2C Music.

How did the album come to be: Says Darnell: “In 1995 I made a movie for Canal Plus called ‘Le Grand Voyage.’ I traveled around the world in less than 80 days, and I hung out with indigenous tribes in places like Ecuador, Australia, West Sumatra, Thailand, etc. The songs I wrote on that incredible journey became the album entitled The Kid And I. It was an August Darnell solo album. It was only released in France. The single from the album was ‘Stand Tall.’ The rights to that album reverted back to me after many years. After listening to the album during the Pandemic (on a break from Netflix), I fell in love with the songs all over again. That is why I decided this masterpiece deserved another shot. The fans deserve to hear these songs. And I am sure I will gather new fans if the album is heard and distributed and promoted properly.”

Darnell, was the bass player and lyricist of Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band, who were nominated for a Grammy in 1976. He soon went on to form his own band, Kid Creole and the Coconuts and soon gained cult status in downtown New York, as well as international superstar fame in Europe and other hip Continents in the Universe.

In the early 80’s the band were a staple of the downtown NYC scene; becoming regular performers at clubs like Hurrah and The Ritz (owned by the late Jerry Brandt). Though their original recordings were on the late-great ZE label (and Chris Blackwell’s Island for Europe), they were soon signed to Sire Records (by Seymour Stein) and gained a huge following in Europe. The group also recorded several albums on SONY thanks to Tommy Mottola.

The band released 14 albums (including their much-acclaimed debut album Off The Coast Of Me which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year) and won a Brit Award for Best International Live Act.

Darnell also speaks to why the new album has a different name: “I decided to change the name of the album so that fans and non-fans would look upon it as an entity unto itself. I assure you that with a little bit of luck (and a whole lot of promo) Nothin’ Left But The Rest will be my Citizen Kane!”
