Unknown benefits of video gaming

It can be difficult to convince anyone that there are benefits to gaming other than pure entertainment. Most people might think of gaming as simply a waste of time. Why should anyone devote so much time to playing video games when there are so many other productive activities available? Fortunately, the idea that there are no benefits to gaming is an untruth that has been told repeatedly. Research has shown that there are actually many benefits of playing video games. Here are a few that can help you change your mind about the pastime.

Improves dexterity – Whoever thought that pressing buttons and manipulating a joystick can bring so many benefits to your dexterity? Gaming helps to strengthen your hand-eye coordination and this is why playing video games has been found to be beneficial for surgeons. Research has shown that along with making fewer errors, surgeons were faster at performing advanced procedures.

Boosts social skills – Yes, this may seem counterintuitive as many people see gaming as a solitary exercise. However, this is largely untrue. Many games require collaboration between gamers. Additionally, research has indicated that gamers were more likely to have good social skills and an increased ability to not only forge new social connections, but maintain better relationships. None of this is surprising considering the collaborative and social tools like joystickgames that have been built to bring gamers together.

Increased physical activity – This is yet another benefit of gaming that at first appears counterintuitive. However, the future of gaming indicates that it will motivate gamers to get off their couches. The roles of both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are increasing in video game development. When Pokémon GO became a massive hit, it encouraged lots of people to get out into the fresh air to play the game and there is evidence to show that this was not a one-off occurrence.

Teaches persistent – Games contain many lessons about overcoming setbacks, not giving up and trying until you achieve your goal. These are important life lessons all people need to have and video games help people to develop them. Video games can help people develop the confidence they need to achieve their goals.

Better brain health – Gamers need to develop a number of skills in order to play well. These skills include memory retention and problem solving.  Research has shown that playing games that sharpen these skills is beneficial for gamers and leads to improved cognitive functioning in players over 50 years old. This benefit is also shown to last for several years.

Expand your interestVideo games have a knack for exposing you to a number of topics that you won’t be exposed to. While a player may not have picked up a history book or watched a new sport on his or her own volition, playing a video game that explores these topics can propel a player to find out more about the topic. It may even convince them to pick up the sport they had only played in the game.
