Vacation in Italy: get to Tuscany by Air

Tuscany is one of Italy’s top tourist destinations with its cities, scenery, and art being some of the reasons people visit. Different cities making up the region contribute to its attractiveness with beaches, wine, food, and luxurious lifestyles. There really is everything for the tourist to enjoy including quaint villages, shopping destinations, and beautiful scenery. Tuscany villas provide the best accommodation to thousands of visitors who travel from far beyond Europe. Before enjoying all of Tuscany’s offerings, we must get there first, and a flight would be the fastest means.

Here is a detailed brief of how to get to Tuscany by air.

There are two major airports in Tuscany that handle international flights. Galileo Galilei International Airport in Pisa handles most flights to the EU. Amerigo Vespucci Airport is only 80km away in Florence and it also handles flights to European cities. People traveling from farther than Europe need to go to a hub in any city from where they can get a direct flight to Florence or Pisa.

You will realize that flying directly to Italy from North America is more expensive than stopovers in other European cities. It is more affordable for example to take a non-stop flight to Paris or London then use a low fare airline to Pisa. If you will be based in Florence, look for a direct flight from your preferred European city instead of going to Pisa and taking the train or bus for the rest of the trip.
Different airlines operate in the two major Tuscany airports as follows.

Galileo Galilei Airport in Pisa

• Turkish Airlines
• Alitalia
• Easyjet
• Qatar
• Norwegian
• Finnair
• Lufthansa
• Vueling
• RyanAir

The arrivals area of the terminal is where you can get information about airport services, arrivals, and departures. This desk is open daily from 7 am to 11 pm but there isn’t a tourist information point.

Left Luggage

If you need a safe place to leave your luggage as you tour Tuscany, ask about it at the info point described above. Pisa airport has a left luggage service at 7 euros per bag. You can bring luggage daily from 9 am to 7 pm and pick it up from 8 o’clock in the morning to 8 in the evening. Before checking your bag, the attendants will ask to scan it just as though it would be going on a plan.

If you plan to hop on a train out of Pisa, leave your luggage at the Pisa Centrale train station. At the station, you can also rent a bike to help you explore the city for a few hours.

Transfer to/from Pisa Airport

The airport is accessible from Firenze-Pisa-Livorno dual carriageway, Genova-Rosigano A12 Motorway, road SS1, and Firenze-Pisa A11. You can reach the terminal by taking the People Mover Shuttle from Pisa Central Station. The shuttle operates from 6 am to midnight and from the airport, you can access it at the train shuttle terminal outside the passenger terminal.

A bus or taxi will also get you to Pisa city center. The major rental services are available at the airport.

There is now a transfer service from the airport in Pisa to Pisa Centrale station where you can take a train to Florence.

When you land, buy a bus ticket to Florence straight at the airport. Most people prefer traveling to Florence from Pisa by bus especially because they are not familiar with the route as visitors. It is a short 60minute ride and therefore practical.

Transfer from the Airport in Florence

Like the international airport in Pisa, the main airport in Florence also has access to Firenze-Pisa A11. You can also access the Autostrada del Sole A1 from the airport which is on the northwestern edge of the city. There are bus shuttle and taxi services to take visitors from the airport to the famous historical center of Florence city.

Other airports

Apart from Galileo Galilei and Amerigo Vespucci International airports you can fly into Rome, Bologn, and Milan airports. From there you can take the train or rent a car to get you to Florence and onward.

Accommodation in Tuscany

To enjoy Tuscany without worrying about your luggage and finding accommodation, the best thing is to find a villa available. If you book in advance, there are many options including some big enough to sleep, twenty people. Villas are located close to the action so that visitors don’t have to take long train rides or rent a car to get to famous attractions.
Tuscany Villas in Italy are suited to tourists discerning tastes and fitted with modern amenities for luxurious living away from home. Swimming pools, manicured gardens, spacious rooms, hot water, cable, delectable meals, and a friendly atmosphere are some of what to expect at your chosen accommodation. At the villa of choice, you will enjoy a 24hour concierge service, personal chef and other exciting offers to make your stay exciting and truly pleasurable. Options of ambient holiday rental villas for tourists include the Villa Di Masseto near Florence, Podere Celli in Chianti, and the Estate of Petorio to name but a few. Depending on where you choose to stay, villas may provide complimentary transfers to and from the airport.

With a good place to stay, you will be free to discover the many offerings of this region including traditional villages, beautiful scenery, food, wine, and historic sites. Feel free to try local cuisine and interact with the friendly locals to learn a thing or two about the beautiful Tuscany. When you tire of discovering new things, pack your bags and have a car take you to the train or bus station to Florence and back to the airport for the flight back home.
As always, when traveling for holiday, make sure to have proper travel insurance in place, exchange your money and check the weather to pack accordingly. If need be, get vaccinated and carry the paperwork with you to avoid issues at the airport. Plan well and in advance for your visit to Tuscany for a peaceful, entertaining and memorable holiday.
