Rocker Sammy Hagar is his Mexican themed restaurant Cabo Wabo Cantina, at 725 Eighth Ave., between West 45th and 46th Streets. He snatched the space away from The Wahlburger, a poorly reviewed burger chain owned by Mark Wahlberg and his siblings. The Wahlberg’s owned the space since 2015, but struggled to pay rent and never finished building the space to open. Last year they were locked out of the building for not keeping up with rent.
Cabo Wabo will have an impressive 8,300-square-foot space with a 10-year lease. The look to open sometime in 2019. Expect Mexican-American fare along with tequila, happy hour deals, and live shows. Hagar occasionally gives performances, so 8th Avenue should be rockin and rollin.
Cabo Wabo, founded by the former Van Halen frontman is already in Mexico’s Cabo San Lucas, Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, and Hollywood. The chain prides itself on being a party destination serving Mexican-American food during the day and slinging shot glasses at night.
With Señor Frog’s and Chevys closed it looks like Cabo Wabo Cantina will be a welcome addition.
