VR documentary On the Morning You Wake Opens at MoMI

Published

on

The Museum of the Moving Image will present On the Morning You Wake to Nuclear Threat: Exploring Social Impact Through Virtual Reality from January 20 to February 12. Co-presented by Games for Change, the exhibition features screenings of On the Morning You Wake (to the End of the World), a groundbreaking virtual reality (VR) documentary at the center of a global nuclear disarmament campaign that demonstrates the unique power of immersive storytelling for social impact, and an exploration of the project’s production and worldwide impact.

“MoMI is proud to be partnering with Games for Change on the presentation of On the Morning You Wake,” said Carl Goodman, the Museum’s Executive Director. “What’s so striking about the work is the way in which new technologies for creative expression can be used to confront and address one of the world’s most powerful technologies of destruction. Whether through documentary film and television or through immersive media, MoMI continues to explore, create awareness of, and, hopefully, spur action related to our most urgent global threats.”

On the Morning You Wake is a VR documentary that immerses viewers in the first-hand experience of people in Hawai’i who faced nuclear threat. On the morning of January 13, 2018, a message from the Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency flashed on phones across the state: “BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.” As cellular communication networks collapsed and panic took hold, 1.4 million people came to understand the real, growing, and urgent nature of today’s nuclear threat. Thirty-eight minutes later, the alert was retracted. Though nothing happened, everything changed.

Coming at a critical moment for public awareness and understanding of nuclear proliferation, the project offers a human-centered perspective on a complex geopolitical issue, making clear the fundamental injustice of a world held hostage by nuclear weapons. Created by Archer’s Mark and Atlas V, On the Morning You Wake (to the End of the World) was originally conceived in partnership with social impact organization Games for Change and Princeton University’s Science and Global Security Program. Since its global premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2022, On the Morning You Wake has inspired audiences around the world to take action to shape the future of nuclear weapons policy and get involved in the global nuclear abolition movement.

On the Morning You Wake is a transformative work of art and a proof point for the power of immersive technologies to drive social impact,” said executive producer Susanna Pollack, president of Games for Change. “We are delighted to partner with MoMI on this first-of-its-kind U.S. museum exhibition of On the Morning You Wake, which aims to spark critical dialogue and action towards nuclear abolition, and inspire current and future creators and changemakers to continue pushing the boundaries of immersive storytelling for impact.”

Through vivid real-life audio testimonies and performances recorded using cutting-edge volumetric video capture technology, the experience brings human stories to life in a 3D world that provides a visual metaphor for the chaos and panic in the immediate aftermath of the alarming event. By seamlessly integrating documentary storytelling with innovative production techniques and a large-scale public education and impact campaign, On the Morning You Wake demonstrates how emerging technology amplifies the power of storytelling to drive social change. This exhibition offers an opportunity to view the VR project, and also provides insight into the creative storytelling process, technical innovation, and worldwide impact of the film. Watch the trailer.

On the Morning You Wake (to the End of the World) was created by Archer’s Mark and Atlas V—the award-winning producers of Notes on Blindness VR—and executive produced by Games for Change and Princeton University’s Science and Global Security Program. Supporters include VR for Good, Arte France, and British Film Institute. The project is currently being distributed internationally by Astrea.

The exhibition On the Morning You Wake to Nuclear Threat: Exploring Social Impact Through Virtual Reality will be on view in MoMI’s Amphitheater Gallery. Tickets for the VR documentary are $15 and include access to the exhibition (an additional $5 offers access to all Museum galleries). Madonna; Jellybean and David Salidor

MADONNA’S BACK — (via Deadline) Madonna is teasing she is back working on her biopic and is titling it Who’s That Girl.

The singer shared a social media post where she is seen with a typewriter and making edits to a movie script.

“I Need A-lot of Bandz to make this………..OKAY. (Story of my life),” she captioned the post on Instagram.

In one of the pictures from the slideshow Madonna teased, you see a line drawn across the title M Untitled. The new title of the biopic is Who’s That Girl, a nod to Madonna’s 1987 film and song of the same name.

The script is noted as being “Rewritten by Madonna and ECW.”

News of Madonna working on her biopic comes almost a year and a half after the project was paused indefinitely. In January 2023, it was reported that the film at Universal Pictures had been scrapped.

Madonna was set to direct the film about her life and career, penning the script with Diablo Cody and Erin Cressida Wilson. Julia Garner had been chosen by the Queen of Pop herself to star in the film after proving to be a standout in a singing and dancing boot camp.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Garner is still attached to star in the film now called Who’s That Girl.

Following the biopic getting put on pause, Madonna suffered a “serious bacterial infection: in June 2023, which made her postpone her Celebration Tour. After recovering from health complications, Madonna embarked on her tour in October 2023 with stops in cities like London, Paris, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Houston, San Francisco, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, and many more.

Having lived through Madonna’s hey-day (and survived) I will admit it’s quite the story: From Patrick Hernandez to 610 Broome Street, Jellybean, Shep, PR-man David Salidor, MTV, Mark Kamins, Preston Powell and Seymour Stein and Warren Beatty too, I wonder just how forthcoming she’ll be. To me, the truth is, those early days were simply astounding and do make a terrific story, but that said, they’ve have to be told honestly and a accurately.

Julia Garner would be great, though I wonder again, what exactly was involved in Madonna’s so-called boot camp? Madonna can be, somewhat demanding!

BIDEN OUT — I knew it was a forgone conclusion after that first (and last debate with Trump) but Biden is officially out; with Kamala Harris eyed as the new choice. Biden did, btw, endorse her, though as of this writing she has not been formally nominated.

Topsy-turvy? Yes. More to come? I’m sure. Stay tuned.

Amos Lee

SHORT TAKES — Amos Lee was terrifically impressive on CBS’ Saturday Sessions this weekend. Stellar in fact.

Adrian Niles

Reminded us of Adrian Niles from years ago … After a seemingly endless heat wave in NYC, I heard one of the weather-heads describe the break in the heat as borderline comfortableGuess Who Don’t Sue: What enterprising director had a red-hot doc ready to go on a iconic superstar, but he let his reps go fingering he could do it with his own mojo? He couldn’t and the deal fell through …

Steven J. Immerman

Brad Balfour interviewed Steven J. Immerman on his In Search Of Pleasure Island tome for the Irish Examiner. Check it out here: https://irishexaminerusa.com/wp/?p=29625

We watched Sofia Coppola’s On The Rocks with Bill Murray and Rashida Jones. Coppola’s Lost In Translation (2003) is perhaps my all-time favorite film. This was a different, lighter path, but we definitely give it a thumbs up. Murray, as usual, was terrific …

Katy Perry

I’m a bit bothered by all this media-backlash about Katy Perry and her comeback single “Women’s World.” There were disturbing items about it in both SHOWBIZ 411 (https://www.showbiz411.com/2024/07/19/katy-perrys-new-single-womans-world-fails-to-launch-with-just-3k-sold) and the Daily Mail (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-13635579/Katy-Perry-comeback-music.html); citing everything from Dr. Luke’s involvement to a hideous video for the song. It all seems a bit unwarranted. It may not be “Firework,”  but not totally a disaster. Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVIJUH29pjU … And, great quote from Peter Frampton on the passing of Bob Newhart: We were friends and when I took him to lunch, it was the Four Seasons. when he took me to lunch, it was some place else. It was the accountant in him.” Much-missed and thank you Bob! for all the laughs.

From top concierge practitioners of Eastern and Western modalities, to clean beauty, sustainability and nutrition, this was one terrific event to attend.

This year’s participants included: Boiron, Ecotone New York, Flyte, Bellantz, Cancer Culture, Rejuvenation Health, reactIVate, STANDwellness, Boxed Water, Biography, Post House, Cocoon and Hive, Mrs Momma Bear Workwear, Juice Press, evolvetogether, Figaro Apothecary, Hamptons Aromatherapy, Tahuu Chocolates, Institute for Integrative Nutrition, Filienna Filigree Jewelry, Rev. Jolene Star and the Enchanted Heart, The Erickson Method, bySILKE, Dr. Lea Lis, and  Happy Coffee by Robert Downey Jr.

One of our favorite things was flyte. I have been wanting to create a floating Orgone and this just may be part of my answer. They also had a bed that vibrated to music and heals, that was highly effective.

I also loved the infra red light therapy by STANDwellness, the energizing clothing by Cocoon and Hive, CBD Chocolates by Tahuu Chocolates. The crystals and healing modality by Rev. Jolene Star and the Enchanted Heart and the amazing massage by Linda. Thank-you as my shoulder was really in pain.

Next onto BIBA’s store opening with Ilene looking fabulous, with the store’s manager. BIBA, has returned to the East End to showcase its collections, featuring an eclectic melange of clothing from both local and European designers. During the years of 1995 to 2010, BIBA held locations in East Hampton and Southampton Village, and has continued to serve customers in South Florida, with a Delray Beach location, ever since. Now open in Southampton Village, BIBA is frequented by celebrities, visitors, and locals alike, and aims to bring a VIP shopping experience to all. Snowbirds can rejoice knowing the store will have locations in both Southampton and South Florida.

John Nicolas, of Mudford Farms in East Hampton Shuckers, grows oysters and populates the waters to clean and make a healthier water and a healthier dish by filtering the water in the biggest way he knows how. Currently incubating about 1 million oysters in this facility alone.

Finally Rick Friedman and his wife is Cindy Lou through a fabulous art party with fireworks, a band and of course art.

Frank Wood

Frank Wood was first celebrated for his work on the Broadway production of Side Man, a performance that earned him both a Tony Award and a Drama League Award. Set against the backdrop of the infamous Trump Tower Meeting of 2016, the play tells the story of an international interpreter thrown up against government systems of congressional and senate interrogations, catapulting him into circumstances beyond his control. “This man could be everyman … one of us,” says playwright Catherine Gropper.

This play is about the loss of individuality and privacy is based on actual events (a chance meeting between the playwright and an actual government interpreter). This two-person play supports a cast of thousands thanks to Mertes’ production scheme including puppetry, film sequences, projections, and intricate lighting and sound.
