Why You Need to Visit Barcelona at Least Once

Barcelona has always been a popular destination – and its popularity is continuing to increase as time goes on with tourists flooding there every year.  You don’t have to be a genius to understand why.  This compelling city is one that you will fall in love with as soon as you land at the airport.  There is lots for everyone to enjoy and it hasa fantastic vibe that’s contagious.  Here we list the reasons you need to visit Barcelona at least once in your life.

It’s Different from Anywhere in Spain

Spain is full to the brim of amazing surprises.  It has an incredibly rich culture with traditions fitting to every region.  The think about Catalans is that they have their own language, habits and history that they are very proud of which makes them stand out.  The only way to understand it is to go to Barcelona, and it’s completely different to anywhere you have ever visited in Spain before.

Las Ramblas

The Las Ramblas is usually one of the first places tourists visit when they get to Barcelona.  It is absolutely beautiful and full of colour. It is one of the most renowned streets (not to mention longest) that Europe has to offer.  You will find everything you need in one strip.  They have market stalls, souvenir shops, ice cream parlours, and restaurants.  This is also where you will find authentic street food if you are looking for a localised experience.

There is Lots of Tapas

If you are a fan of tapas, then there is no better place to visit. Tapasis part of their heritage and culture, and some people travel to Barcelona solely to sample these little plates of food.   You will find them full of fruit, veg and more. Spanish cuisine is one of the healthiest there is – and there is so much variety, that you can enjoy a party in your mouth.  There are some great tourist companies such as Barcelonina that have food tours available to sample some of this amazing food.

It’s Perfect for Sports Lovers

For football fans, Barcelona is a haven.  It’s of course home to FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, 2 of the most famous football teams in the world.  Try and schedule in your Barcelona visit when there is a match on and soak in the atmosphere live.  The football fans in Barcelona are avid, so you will love the feeling they create when cheering on their team.  There are loads of other sports that you can enjoy live, like tennis, golf, basketball, hockey and others.

You Can Always Get WiFi

A pet peeve when you are on holiday can be that you need to find places to go to get WiFi.  In Barcelona – the great thing is there is free WiFi everywhere.  It’s also not restricted in terms of location – the WiFi network they have in place means you can get access to the internet via access points located all over the place. You don’t need to worry about reading your emails, or accessing apps – everything’s more comfortable and more convenient with the free WiFi.

It’s Romantic Sunsets

Barcelona isn’t just known for sports and food – it’s one of the most romantic cities in the world. They have unforgettable sunsets that can be enjoyed from high spots all over the city. For one of the best views – make sure you go to the Montjuic Mountain, or perhaps the MNAC museum.  Those spots will give you a panoramic view of the whole of Barcelona.  Viewing the sunset from there is a truly unforgettable experience and one not to miss.

You Don’t Need to Choose Between Beaches and Mountains

Usually, when you book a holiday, you need to choose between a beach holiday or a mountain holiday, but with Barcelona – you can have it all at the same time.  You could be enjoying a fantastic mountain hike and find yourself on a glorious beach.  The same goes when you are walking down the beach, you could find yourself walking up a picturesque mountain.  If you plan on visiting Barcelona, make sure you bring your bikini and your walking boots – you never know when you might need them.

The Port Olimpic

This district was born from the Olympic Games that took place in 1992.  It’s one of the most visited parts of the city since then.  People gather round to walk, have some food and bathe and bask in the sun.  With a whale bronze there to greet you when you arrive – you definitely can’t miss it.

The Nightlife Scene

If there’s one thing that Barcelona knows how to do, it’s throw a party.  It has lots of diversity – so there is something for everyone to enjoy. If you are looking for something on the more sophisticated side of things – then you might want to check out El Born.  Here you will find some trendy bars and bistros.  If you are looking for something authentic – then you need to hit the Gothic Quarter.  You will discover hidden gems in every corner, and for those of you who do want a taste of home – you will find British and Irish pubs too.

Bike Tours

Cycling around the city is one of the best ways to experience Barcelona.  There are some great tours you can be a part of, or else you can hire a bike and go it alone.  The city is filled with narrow lanes and roads – so this is the easiest way to get around.  You will also find that the locals are accommodating should you have any issues.

The El Raval

The El Raval in itself is a reason to visit Barcelona.  It is incredibly colourful and diverse and also steeped in history.  You will find lots of restaurants and bars as well as a whole load of culture.  You will find the Museo d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona and the MACBA where you will find work from international artists.  The exhibits change regularly, so every time you go, it’s like a new experience.  As well as work from famous painters and sculptors – there are also lots of conferences and workshops held there.

Boutique Shopping

If you are looking for a unique shopping experience, then you will love Barcelona.  The city is packed with beautiful, independent shops. You can find anything from fantastic fashion steals to curios you won’t find anywhere else.  This will allow you to stand out in the crowd.  There are spots for cheap shopping in Barcelona such as Portal de Angel – and there are large shopping malls too, such as the Maremagnum shopping centre.

The People

Part of the charm of Barcelona is the people.  Everyone is so friendly.  This makes your experience much more enjoyable.  You will be greeted with a smile whenever you visit a hotel, restaurant or club.  Everyone is so helpful that you will fall in love with the culture.

If you had Barcelona on your list of destinations, but you haven’t yet decided whether or not to go – then hopefully we have helped you make up your mind.  There is so much to offer you are sure to have a trip of a lifetime.
