New York City Celebrates The 50th Anniversary of the Lunar Landing

New York City Celebrates The 50th Anniversary of the Lunar Landing

This weekend, the city celebrated the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing. With several events the most relevant was Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin’s famous lunar boot print, which landed in Times Square on Saturday. To mark the anniversary, the Aldrin Family Foundation hosted a day-long, free, family-friendly celebration inside to the Marriott Marquis hotel, due to the temperatures. Visitors could walk on the moon, just like Buzz Aldrin. A massive floor mosaic of a larger-than-life print of Buzz Aldrin’s footprint on the moon was made up of photographs submitted by people around the world. This mosaic is part of The People’s Moon project, a collaboration between co-founders Christina Korp, who serves as the Chief Operating Officer and Marketing Officer at the Aldrin Family Foundation, and U.K. mosaic artist Helen Marshall. The space also featured a screen displaying moments from Apollo 11 and memories shared by students and notable celebrities. The event also featured appearances by former NASA astronauts Nicole Stott and Winston Scott

You can still get in on action the with the following:

Open until Sept. 3, 2019, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibit, “Apollo’s Muse: The Moon in the Age of Photography,” celebrates the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing through stunning, visceral imagery.

The exhibit features images of the moon from the earliest origins of photography to the present. In addition to photographs, the exhibit displays a selection of drawings, prints, paintings, films, astronomical tech and cameras that were actually used by some of the Apollo astronauts.

This exhibition is accessible with general museum admission.
