Whether you’re travelling or simply want to ensure the safety of your home for years to come, there are a few ways to make sure your home stays as safe and secure as possible. Below are four tips and tricks for keeping your home in great condition, and safe from damage or break-ins.
Find a house-sitter
If you’re going on holiday, or you have a second property that you don’t live in on a permanent basis, finding a live-in guardian is a great way to ensure that your home stays safe. It’s a great alternative to more traditional security options, as it’s more cost effective and doesn’t alert to the public that your property is vacant.
Be mindful of water damage
When you’re cooking or washing clothes and dishes, keep the internal kitchen door shut and the windows open to prevent any excess moisture from being carried into the rest of the home. This will help to prevent mould and condensation from building up. If possible, you can also install an extractor fan to remove as much moisture from the air as you can.
Test fire alarms regularly
It’s wise to check fire alarms and other security alarms on a regular basis to ensure they’re still working – test your fire detector on a weekly basis and vacuum it at least once a year to stop dust from blocking the alarm components and preventing them from working properly.
Carry out an annual gas and electricity check
Whether your home runs on gas or electricity, it’s a good idea to have a yearly check to ensure everything is working as it should. You can contact your energy provider to have them carry out these checks, and to notify you of any faults that could compromise the safety of your home.
