Vaping – Why Its Popularity Continues to Grow

Vaping – Why Its Popularity Continues to Grow

When electronic cigarettes first became widely available, many people wrote it off as a hipster fad. Others saw it as just another type of nicotine replacement therapy that could be effective but would not really replace the habit of smoking cigarettes. Over time it has become clear that these assumptions were wrong.

Over the past decade there has been a huge growth in the number of people who have switched from tobacco to vaping and its popularity shows no sign of dwindling yet. Many people have also reported being able to give up smoking with minimal inconvenience using this method.

However, as vaping has become more and more popular, it is also something that has seen stricter regulation. At first people who took up vaping saw it as a way to get their nicotine fix wherever they were, while smoking was almost always forbidden in public in most countries. Now there are regulations in most places about where someone can use an electronic cigarette, and they are often the same rules as applied to tobacco. Regulations about the sale of vaping products have also become stricter over time.

Here we take a look at some of the reasons why vaping still seems to be on the rise despite increases in regulatory influence.

Vaping and Smoking Cessation

The potential long-term effects of using electronic cigarettes have not yet been fully discovered. This means that it is impossible to say that vaping is entirely harmless. However, studies that have been done into vaping from the perspective of smoking cessation have shown that it is an effective way to deal with a nicotine addiction and is considerably less harmful than continuing to smoke cigarettes. It is highly debated whether or not starting vaping should be something someone should consider if they do not already smoke, as the effects are not fully understood yet, however for a smoker it is known to be one of the most effective methods of quitting.

The main reason why vaping has been a good method of giving up smoking for a lot of people is that unlike other forms of nicotine replacement therapy, such as patches and gum, it offers a way to replace the actual habit of having a cigarette. Vaping does not feel exactly like smoking but it’s a lot closer to it than chewing some gum or wearing a patch. For a lot of people, the hardest part of giving up smoking is not being able to have a cigarette at the times when they normally would, such as when they are relaxing with friends, when they have just eaten, or first thing in the morning. With vaping, people find that they are able to reduce the amount of nicotine over time and wean themselves off the physical addiction without having to address the habit at the same time. They can then either continue to use the electronic cigarette with a nicotine free e-liquid or gradually stop using their vaping device all together and completely give up. This method allows them to avoid nicotine withdrawal symptoms, which can be quite unpleasant, and also addresses the habitual side of their addiction in their own time without having to deal with cravings while they do it.

When it comes to giving up smoking or indeed any other kind of addiction, different things tend to work with different people. Some people find it easier to completely give up smoking without something else that reminds them of doing it. However, for a wide range of people, vaping has proven to be the most effective way to end their cigarette habit.

Vaping and Appearance

Another reason why a lot of people have made the switch to vaping is that it has much less of an impact on the appearance than smoking does. People who use electronic cigarettes do not have to worry about nicotine stains on their fingers, or their hair looking dirty and discolored from clouds of smoke. There is also of course the matter that many non-smokers find the smell of cigarette smoke very unappealing. Electronic cigarette e-liquids tend to smell quite pleasant and do not offend the people who would normally be put off by being around a smoker.

Vaping and Social Situations

Even though vaping is not always permitted in public places depending on where you live, it is still regarded as a lot more socially acceptable than smoking. People tend not to mind others vaping at parties and other private events which can make it feel a lot less antisocial than having to go outside all the time to smoke. There is also far less of a stigma around vaping because it doesn’t present the issue of second-hand smoke.

Vaping and Cost

Another thing that could be a factor in the continued growth of vaping is that there is a lot more variety in terms of the cost of using different products to do it than with smoking cigarettes. Cigarette costs tend to be fairly constant in most cities, however with vaping you can order products online and shop around to get good deals. There are even bargain e-liquid sites like where vaping can become a lot cheaper than buying the products in shops.

Will its Growth Continue?

It is likely that the growth in vaping will continue while there are still smokers who have not yet made the switch. Most people who smoke tobacco do intend to give up at some point or have struggled with giving up in the past. Because vaping is such an appealing option for people in this situation, they will continue to make the move. The only thing likely to stop the rise in vaping from continuing is if regulations become prohibitively stricter, if there are discoveries around harmful effects from vaping, or if something even better comes along as an alternative for quitting smoking.

For now, however, it looks like the trend is set to continue, and it may even become the case that vaping becomes more common than tobacco use in the very near future.
