A Guide To Carpark Line Marking

A Guide To Carpark Line Marking

Having clear lines on a carpark or parking bay is important to ensure efficient and effortless parking.  Whether you want to update faded parking lines or need to start from scratch, we’ve got a helpful guide for you on how to get the best carpark line markings.

Find a professional service provider

First of all, you need to find a professional service provider like, whose range of services include carpark line markings. Ideally, the company should have extensive experience working on different surfaces. They should also have a positive reputation with past customers, and you can find this out by asking for their references or looking through their online reviews.

They’ll start by conducting an initial survey to determine the line marks needed for your space. They should also remove existing line markings with relevant machinery to make room for the new markings. This will give the service provider an idea of how much space they’re working with and the breadth of work required.

This is enough information for them to provide you with a clear quotation.  The benefit of hiring a professional company to do your line markings is that they’ll also provide you with valuable advice on the best places to make the markings etc.

The good news is there’s a wide range of car park line markings to choose from nowadays, especially for private landlords.

Things to look for

  • Make sure the company you hire uses a high-quality, quick drying paint that’s also highly visible.
  • Quality is of utmost importance, so don’t be shy to ask them to show you their previous work. That way, you can see for yourself whether or not their services are right for you.
  • Consider your budget and hire a company that offers competitive pricing without sacrificing on quality.

Types of car parking systems available

The modern consumer is spoilt for choice when it comes to the variety of car park marking systems available. This includes:

  • Pre-formed thermoplastic
  • Hot applied thermoplastic
  • Tape
  • Traffic paint

Each of these options comes with its own pros and cons, so you should base your decision on your unique circumstances. Here’s a rundown of each option:

  • Hot applied thermoplastic: This is one of the most widely utilised line marking substances in the UK public road system and in many other parts of the world. It’s mainly available in white and yellow with its secondary colors being green, red and blue. Hot applied thermoplastic also comes with unique features like night time reflectivity which makes for safer driving at night. This substance can be applied using a spray, screed or extrusion method.
  • Pre-formed thermoplastic: This is a pre-made form of line marking that offers tremendous benefits for private use. It comes with pre-fabricated logos for easy application, and it’s commonly applied by hand with the help of a gas torch.
  • Tape: Carpark line marking tape comes in a wide variety of different colors. It’s purchased as a roll that you can apply by smoothing it onto your desired surface. This makes it ideal for DIY application, and although it’s a bit pricey this type of line marking material offers different design options. The only downside is that tape marking is not as long-lasting as other options on this list, because vandals can easily remove it. Although it’s perfect for use on smooth outdoor floor surfaces, it’s no suitable for porous asphalt and other open textured surfaces.
  • Traffic paint: Traffic paint comes highly recommended for private use due its compatibility with block paving, concrete and other indoor/outdoor surfaces. To apply it, all you need is a roller, brush and a few power tools. The great thing about traffic paint is that it adheres well to these materials and it can stay on for years without fading. But, do keep in mind that it’s slow to dry and has a very strong chemically smell.

Well, there you have it, complete-albeit concise- guide to carpark line markings and their different applications. Regardless of the type of carpark line marking you choose, be sure to apply it onto a clean surface and when in doubt, consult with a professional about the best option for your circumstances.
