What are the Most Common Dental Procedures?

One of the more overlooked aspects of your health may be dental or oral hygiene. While it’s important to see your doctor for regular annual checkups, it is equally necessary to see your dentist every six months. When you do visit the dentist, you are likely to receive not only a cleaning but another procedure depending on the state of your teeth or gums.

Dental cleaning (also known as scaling) is the most common procedure done in a dental office by a dentist or dental hygienist. The office of Midtown Manhattan dentist, New York Total Dental, says that everybody needs to have their teeth checked out every few months for signs of gum disease, plaque accumulation and tartar build up. Regardless of how strict their oral hygiene regimen is, most people start to develop tartar (also known as calculus) every 6 to 12 months, and would need a consultation from their dentist for its removal.

To get a better idea of the other most common types of dental work, it’s important to learn about General Dentistry Procedures 101.

What are the Most Common Dental Procedures?

Whether your teeth and gums are problematic or if they have always been very healthy, there are a number of dental procedures that are extremely common. These are the most common:

Braces: Braces may be necessary if you have crooked or crowded teeth. Braces are a device that corrects alignment issues of the teeth, including an overbite or underbite. They are often made of metallic wire and rubber bands but may be made of ceramic. They work by placing pressure on the teeth to shift them into proper position.

Fillings: If you have cavities, holes in the teeth from decay, fillings can be used to correct the problem. Fillings are among the most common dental procedures. They can also be used to correct teeth that have problems from trauma.

Crowns and caps: Dental crowns, also known as caps, are placed on your teeth to restore portions of the tooth that have suffered damage, such as if they were cracked or broken. They work by being placed over the entire part of the tooth that appears over the gum line.

Dental bridges: Dental bridges are used as anchors in areas where teeth are missing. They are held in place by the teeth surrounding the area where there are missing teeth and hold a false tooth in place.

Dental implants: Dental implants are a good option if you are missing teeth but your gums are healthy enough to support them. They are implanted into the gums and serve as the root so that artificial teeth can be placed over them. Dental implants are an alternative to dentures.

Dentures: If you are missing teeth, a common dental procedure to rectify the problem involves dentures. Dentures are devices that replace the missing teeth. There are partial and full dentures depending on the number of teeth missing.

Extractions: Extractions are another common dental procedure. An extraction means the removal of a tooth that is damaged beyond repair. Extractions are also necessary when the mouth is crowded, when it involves the removal of wisdom teeth, or when certain types of orthodontic treatment are necessary.

Root canals: A root canal is a procedure you might need if you have a decayed tooth or tooth with an abscess. The procedure involves opening the tooth to clear out affected tissue within. The area is then filled and sealed by the dentist.

Overall, there are other dental procedures, but these rank as the most common.
